Children & Abandonment

Some say children are gift from God. Some other may say children bring so much joy to the family. Their coming is often longed for by soon-to-be parents. They call it blessing when a married woman find two stripes on her test pack.  Women may say that they forget the pain of labor once they hold the newly born baby in their arms. So, it can be said that children are a package full of joy. However, there are so many children being abandoned and neglected nowadays. Why so if they say having children brings so much joy to the parents and the family? There are several causes why parents would abandon their children. Speaking of children and abandonment, it links to various aspects; poverty or unemployment, teenage pregnancies, divorce, abuse of the child, and many other reasons to child abandonment.

Why poverty? It is said that poverty is often a root cause of child abandonment. Sad to say, children born in poor families are more likely to be abandoned by their parents. The parents are not capable enough to make money and earn a living for the children and the family, so children are often forced to earn their own living by “working” in the streets. They sell their playing time for some pennies which are not even enough for daily needs. They are in streets instead of school to obtain education. It is even pathetic than infants nowadays are often “sold” by their parents so their older siblings can take them to streets to gain sympathy from people passing by. In the end, they sell poverty to earn their living. Lack of parental economic resources such as disposable income restricts children’s opportunities.
